A case of a new Mpox variant has been detected in the US for the first time. The US health authority CDC said on Saturday that the patient was someone who had recently traveled from East Africa to California.
The patient was treated and self-isolated at home after returning to the US. Symptoms are currently improving. According to the CDC, this is clade I of the virus.
Clade Ib has probably been ruling Congo since September 2023. The WHO suspects that the pathogen adapted to this host as it spread among humans.
Already proven in Germany
Only recently was a new Mpox variant, clade Ib, detected for the first time in Germany. The Robert Koch Institute reported the first confirmed case of the disease in our neighboring country in October.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, has been a health problem in parts of Africa since the 1970s. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global public health emergency for 10 months in 2022 due to the spread.
