So far the decision has not been confirmed, but if confirmed it could be a big boost for Ukraine just before Biden passes the country’s baton to Donald Trump, who has repeatedly promised to end the Ukrainian war.
Current US President Joe Biden has given Ukraine permission to use US long-range weapons for limited attacks in Russia, according to The Washington Post.
So far, neither the White House nor the Pentagon have confirmed this. This also applies to the Ukrainian government of Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to sources, Biden’s authorization could be in response to sending thousands of North Korean soldiers to Ukraine to join Russian forces trying to regain control of Russian territory held by Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region conquered.
This authorization is a response to what the Zelensky government has been asking for for months, arguing that only these types of weapons can undermine Russia’s military capabilities and give Ukraine a certain advantage on the ground.
If confirmed, Biden’s decision could provide a major boost for Ukraine just before his administration gives way in January to that of Donald Trump, who has repeatedly promised to end the war in Ukraine.
In this sense, there are fears that Trump is promoting an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin in which Ukraine will relinquish part of its territory currently occupied by Russian forces.
The authorized weapons are mainly supersonic guided missiles, called ATACMS, which can carry conventional or cluster warheads and have a range of about 300 kilometers.
