The Ukrainian president emphasized that “Putin is focused on winning this war” and that “he will not stop on his own.”
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyon Tuesday asked for the European Union’s support to “push” Russia to achieve a “just peace” in Ukraine by 2025.
In a speech by videoconference to the European Parliament, coinciding with the 1,000 days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Zelensky called for the EU’s support more sanctions and punishments for the Russian economyin addition to allowing Russia to be attacked on its own territory, in order to reach an agreement that guarantees peace in Ukraine.
In this sense, he has emphasized that the recipe is to strengthen Ukraine and Russia taking money and power away from Russia. “They know very well that Putin does not value people or rules. He only values money and power. That is what we must remove to restore peace,” he stressed.
“Together we have achieved a lot, but we should not be afraid to do more every day (…). Every day is the best time to put more pressure on Russia. And it is clear that without certain key factors, Russia will lack the real motivation to enter into meaningful negotiations,” Zelensky warned, pointing to the next actions he expects from the EU, such as the destruction of its air bases, the loss of its capabilities to produce missiles and drones or confiscate their assets.
On the other hand, Zelensky has also warned “those who think they can sell to any country, Ukraine, Georgia or Moldova and get something in return” that “no one can enjoy calm waters in the middle of a storm.”
Before Zelensky’s speech, the President of the European Parliament said: Roberta Metsolahas emphasized that the institution he leads has remained by Ukraine’s side during these thousand days and will continue to do so “as long as it is necessary”.
