A shooting at a nightclub in the Norwegian capital Oslo has left two people dead and more than a dozen injured, Norwegian police said Saturday evening. A suspect has been arrested near the establishment, which is mainly visited by homosexuals.
Public broadcaster NRK and other local media reported that the shooting took place at the London Pub, a popular gay bar in the city center. The annual Pride parade takes place in Oslo on Saturday.
Authorities assume individual perpetrators
“I saw a man arrive with a bag, he grabbed a gun and started shooting,” reports NRK journalist Olav Roenneberg. According to NRK, there may have been at least three crime scenes. Several shots were fired. The police do not rule out the possibility that more than one person could be the perpetrators. However, this has not yet been confirmed. Other sources reported that authorities assumed it was a lone perpetrator.
“Two people have been confirmed to have died,” Oslo police said in a tweet. The newspaper “Aftenposten” reported that at least ten people had received medical treatment, three of whom were said to be seriously injured. Twelve more people were slightly injured.
Police cordoned off area
According to the Swedish news agency TT, the alarm went off just after 1 a.m. on Saturday night. Witnesses at the scene told media that people ran away in panic. Police cordoned off a large area and asked eyewitnesses to move to a nearby hotel.
Photos published by the VG newspaper and NRK TV station, among others, showed a large gathering of rescue workers, including police officers and ambulances, outside the London Pub.
Helicopters hovered over central Oslo, while ambulance and police car sirens could be heard throughout the city. The Norwegian capital’s university hospital said it was on alert after the shooting.
