The Kremlin’s tactics are working: Ukrainians are increasingly fed up with war, according to a survey

Date:

Vladimir Putin’s tactics of attrition appear to be becoming increasingly effective as the war continues. According to surveys, war fatigue and disappointment with the West are increasingly spreading in Ukraine.

“An average of 52 percent would like to see their country negotiate to end the war as quickly as possible,” says a survey now published by the Gallup polling institute.

The investigations are said to have taken place in August and October 2024. Only 38 percent want to keep fighting until victory. By comparison, in 2022, 73 percent were in favor of fighting and only 22 percent in favor of negotiations. In 2023, 63 percent were in favor of continuing the war and 27 percent in favor of a quick end to the war.

Moscow urges ‘denazification’
Russia has made ceding territory and not joining NATO a condition of negotiations. Moreover, Ukraine would have to undergo a so-called denazification, which in Moscow would probably mean the installation of a Russia-friendly government in Kiev.

According to the survey, trust in the West in general has also fallen in Ukraine. Only 40 percent of respondents approve of the US leadership role, while 37 percent are skeptical. Shortly after the start of the war, the approval rating was 66 to 16 percent.

After all, the role of other allies such as Germany is still assessed positively by the majority: 50 percent (2022: 46 percent, 2023: 53 percent) support Germany’s actions, 29 percent (2022: 35 percent, 2023: 20 percent) reject It.

The Ukrainians are not giving up on NATO
Although a majority still hope to join the EU and NATO, expectations of doing so within the next ten years have fallen from 73 to 61 percent for the EU and from 64 to 51 percent for NATO.

Gallup said it surveyed 1,000 people by phone. According to the information, the error rate is 3 percent. Ukrainian opinion research institutes generally interview twice as many people for representative surveys.
