Even during the rule of President Bashar al-Assad, Israel repeatedly carried out airstrikes on supply routes of the Shia terrorist militia Hezbollah in Syria. With the fall of its long-time ruler and dozens of attacks on key military facilities in the country, Israel has apparently achieved yet another success against Hezbollah.
According to Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem, the supply route for weapons to Lebanon is now completely broken. “Hezbollah has lost the military supply route,” Qassem said in a televised address. But that is just “a minor detail” in the ongoing battle against Israel. The militia is ‘flexible’ and ‘continuity’ is important.
Iran was previously the main supporter of Hezbollah and provided the heavily armed militia with weapons overland via Syria. The overthrow of Assad in Syria, which was also allied with Tehran, is therefore a serious setback for Iran in the fight against its declared arch-enemy Israel.
Hezbollah hopes for good contacts with the rebel alliance
Hezbollah is now trying to establish good contacts with the new leadership in Damascus. Regarding the rebel alliance in Syria led by Islamists, Qassem said: “We hope that the new rule in Syria will regard Israel as an enemy and not normalize relations with it.” But no judgment will be passed on the group yet. It is clear that they have taken positions.
