Salzburg Mozartkugeln has not rolled off the assembly line in Salzburg since last week. Mirabell’s golden balls will be produced elsewhere after the discontinuation of Salzburg Chocolate. The American company behind it does not want to reveal exactly where.
Last week the last Mozartkugel rolled off the assembly line in Grödig. Mirabell’s “real Salzburg Mozartkugeln” will be produced elsewhere after the end of Salzburg chocolate. The American group Mondelez had already given the license to someone else before the KEX Group decided to close the chocolate factory in Grödig.
They do not want to reveal exactly where the Mirabell balls will be manufactured in the future. “We have found the best solution in our European network,” said Mondelez spokeswoman Laura Ecker-Sperlich. But the ‘real’ ones no longer come from Austria.
While the original Mozartkugeln from the Fürst confectionery in Elsbethen are made from silver paper, Mirabell’s golden chocolate products are likely to come from a gigantic factory of the Mondelez Group. The group operates 18 factories in Central Europe. In Lörrach, Germany alone, more than four million bars of chocolate are produced every day. Will Germany also become a home for the Salzburg balls?
This is fine according to trademark law. “The ‘real Salzburg’ Mozartkugel does not have to be produced in Salzburg,” says Daniela Mutz of the patent office. This does not contradict findings from naming disputes that took place years ago. They mainly revolved around the term ‘original’. Only a prince can wield it. After all, pastry chef Paul Fürst invented the Mozartkugel in 1890.
