In the flood area, 9,700 signatures should now stop the major project

“No Rewe warehouse in the flood area”: Opponents are storming with a petition against the planned construction project in St. Pölten. 9,700 people have signed, with more expected to sign by the end of the year.

As reported, a large-scale project in St. Pölten has been facing strong headwinds for more than two years. With 9,700 signatures, it has now grown into a ‘counterstorm’. Because so many people have clearly spoken out in a petition from the citizens’ initiative “Soil Protection St. Pölten” against the new central warehouse of Rewe and the associated closure of 17 hectares of agricultural land in the St. Georgen district.

The petition was handed over to those responsible at the end of this year
Now the project has also been affected by the recent flood disaster. According to Romana Drexler of the citizens’ initiative, the new construction project should be carried out in the flood area, exactly on the spot that was completely flooded only a few weeks ago. And thus also destroy the natural retention areas. The land for the logistics center is located in the flood zone of a 100- and 30-year event (HQ100 and HQ30).

“The 9,700 signatures show how great the concerns of the population are,” said Christina Engel-Unterberger, councilor of the Green Party. She appeals to the company to ask itself whether it makes sense: “If there is a flood above HQ100, the warehouse is under water. The enormous increase in traffic of 1,000 trucks per day and the non-transparent contract structure make the project even more problematic. According to the purchase contract, Rewe can simply withdraw from the purchase if approvals are lacking.

Lawyer Wolfram Schachinger also sees a legal scandal in the repurposing of building land into grassland in the HQ100 areas and in the environmental impact assessment. According to the state’s decision, the project is not subject to an EIA. However, the city only submitted a flood protection project and not the planned central warehouse for official approval.

The focus is on safe local supplies
“The basic requirement for a possible implementation is comprehensive flood protection. Responsibility for this lies with the governing body,” Rewe explains briefly. The city itself only refers people to the company upon request. It is said that general development of the area has been planned for years.
