After Tuesday’s metro fire on the U1 line, the middle section of the metro line will remain closed until early December. This is stated in a report by Wiener Linien. 50 meters of track, 25 sleepers and several kilometers of cable need to be replaced.
As reported, the U1 line between Schwedenplatz and Südtiroler Platz is interrupted. Continuous operation is not planned again until the first week of December. Until then, replacement traffic will continue to exist.
Thresholds and cables defective
After the defective train was removed, clean-up work began. First, the tunnel walls were checked and the track bed cleaned. “It turned out that a total of approximately 50 meters of the route was affected, of which 15 meters suffered extensive damage. There were defects in sleepers and cable support systems,” says Wiener Linien.
In the coming days, 50 meters of track, 25 sleepers, 400 meters of cable ducts and several kilometers of cable will have to be replaced. Due to limited space, the damaged infrastructure must first be removed and disposed of before the new material can be delivered and installed.
After completion of the work, a track measuring vehicle will be guided over the route. This checks with millimeter precision whether all track dimensions fit. The final step is to check the route ventilation and the train safety system. If these checks are also positive, the green light can be given to start work. The renovation work is expected to be completed in the first week of December and the U1 can run continuously again, the transport company said in a statement.
Alexandra Reinagl, Managing Director of Wiener Linien: “We are doing everything we can to be able to offer operations in the usual quality again as quickly as possible.”
Silver Arrows are checked
It is still unclear how the fire in the set started.
“All vehicles are regularly checked and there are clear legal requirements. “Before every trip, the vehicle is checked for functionality; various safety systems and sensors monitor the train while it is moving,” says Wiener Linien.
The Silver Arrows are checked in the workshop every six weeks. The annual audit takes place once a year. The vehicle is disassembled and all relevant components are measured and components are routinely replaced. “I have ordered an additional check of all Silver Arrows of the corresponding generation,” says Reinagl.
