Minimal purchase quantities tempt to consume more and therefore cause some resentment in Carinthian households. A modern solution is required.
Experts have been warning for years that water resources should be used sparingly. And meanwhile, periods of drought have also reached us. The consequences of climate change do not seem to be fully realized in some Carinthian communities. The precious liquid is still handled carelessly there.
Minimum purchase quantity causes resentment
The municipality of Techelsberg provides an example of this. Concerned residents point out that the kind of billing practiced there tempts households not to pay attention to water consumption. It charges a minimum order quantity. And that not only causes misunderstanding and resentment among environmental and climate protectors.
“It cannot be that you are being punished for saving water!” irritated a “Krone” reader from Techelsberg, who also immediately gave a concrete example. His bill for the past year shows a consumption of two cubic meters of water. However, the municipality charged him 100 cubic meters.
Type of settlement no longer up-to-date
When asked by the “Krone” in the city office, it said: “This minimum purchase amount was decided by ordinance decades ago. We do not charge any start-up costs for this; it is much more expensive.”
Critics do not consider this type of compensation, which is also used in other predominantly rural communities, current. It tempts households that actually don’t need much water to waste water.
