In Vienna-Hernals, 67 trees now have to be felled. An initiative is raising charges against the city and the federal real estate company.
It is currently the dominant subject in Hernals: there is a threat of tree bleeding in the park of the former Gersthof hospital. 67 old trees now fall victim to the planned construction of two gyms – reported the “Krone”.
Helmut Bednar of the “Tree Protection Hernals” initiative is now making serious accusations: “Until now there has been only renovation of the existing building. The city and the federal real estate company have always kept their mouths shut about the massive expansion and destruction of the park area .”
According to the Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft (BIG), about half of the entire park is being converted into a modern, new school site.
In response to a “Krone” request, BIG confirms that it will preserve as much nature and trees as possible. But according to an expert report, 20 of the trees have reached their physiological age limit, are no longer safe or have already died. 18 pieces are cut so that a garden floor is created from a cellar.
The rest will have to make way for the new construction. However, about 70 replacement plants are planned directly on the site, and about 300 more in Hernals and Währing.
Bednar and his initiative are now asking for this report and want to investigate the so-called diseased trees themselves. District leader Jagsch (SPÖ) states that “investment in modern educational infrastructure is a basic requirement for a good education”. Construction will start in the fall of 2022.
