A terminal at London’s second largest airport, Gatwick, was evacuated on Friday after a “prohibited item” was found in a piece of luggage. A security perimeter has been established, Sussex Police said.
From 10:55 GMT (11:55 CET), passengers will no longer be able to enter the South Terminal. “The safety of our passengers and employees is our top priority,” said an airport spokesperson. Sussex Police said an explosive ordnance disposal team was deployed as a precaution.
“To ensure the safety of the public, staff and other airport users, a security cordon has been put in place while the case is being processed,” a police spokesperson said.
Significant delays in air traffic
Buses and trains in the area around the affected airport’s south terminal would also not be able to operate. An airport spokesperson said on X (formerly Twitter; see post above) that the north terminal was not affected. There were significant air traffic delays.
