On Friday afternoon there was a major alarm for the fire brigade in St. Roman near Schärding in Upper Austria. A fire broke out next to a carpentry workshop in a residential building made partly of wood. In Regau (Vöcklabruck district) the roof construction of a family house also caught fire in the evening.
In St. Roman, the fire brigade had been called to a “commercial/industrial fire”, but on site it turned out that the adjacent residential building was completely engulfed in flames, as can be seen on the website of the fire brigade. A huge column of smoke rose. Nearly 190 firefighters from around the area arrived on the scene with 23 vehicles.
They found plenty of fire water because there was a pond right next to the carpentry shop and a swimming pool next to the house. The fire was almost extinguished after about two hours. The neighboring wood store was spared the flames, the wind from the opposite direction was a welcome help.
Lightning strike causes fire
In the early evening hours, the Regau fire brigade was called for help. Around 7 p.m., lightning struck a single-family home and set the rafter on fire. The force of the impact also damaged the roof and a chimney of the neighboring house, police said.
60 firefighters from surrounding communities quickly extinguished the fire, but individual embers in the false ceilings had to be removed late into the night.
