After the impact of a Russian medium-range missile in Ukraine on Thursday – krone.at reported – the country’s military is negotiating with the US about systems to defend against intercontinental ballistic missiles.
“Ukraine does not have the means to launch intercontinental ballistic missiles, but the Americans do,” an unnamed armed forces official told state news agency Ukrinform in Kiev. “Ukraine will turn to the United States for such weapons,” he said.
Modernized versions of the Patriot air defense system and the Aegis Ashore missile defense system were mentioned. The US has had such Aegis defense shields in Romania since 2016 and in Poland for a few days. They are said to be aimed against possible Iranian attacks, but Moscow also sees them as a defense against its missiles.
Medium-range missile fired at Dnipro
According to President Vladimir Putin, Russia demonstratively fired a new medium-range missile with multiple nuclear warheads at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Thursday. He threatened further missile attacks on Ukraine, but also on supporting countries.
The continued Russian airstrikes have already strengthened Ukraine’s air defenses with major foreign aid, but without being able to protect the entire country that has been under attack for more than a thousand days.
The defense rate is good for drones, but also for older Soviet missiles and cruise missiles. Ukrainian air defenses are almost always powerless against Iskander missiles and new Russian hypersonic weapons.
