Operation for fire brigade, water rescue and the helicopter of the emergency doctor on Friday afternoon at the Tyrolean Achensee: A 70-year-old German fell about twelve meters from the Gaisalmsteig. Thanks to the quick intervention of his companions, the man did not drown.
The pensioner was on his way to the Gaisalm with his son and son-in-law. The accident then happened around 11.20 am on the outer Schottenring at a narrow transition to the Gaisalmsteig. As Walter Sarg, operational manager of the Achenkirch fire brigade, describes: “At this point there is an approximately twelve meter long gravel trench, over which the man fell and ended up with his head in the Achensee”.
Son and son-in-law immediately alerted the emergency services. One of the two went to a spot about eight meters from the canal, went down there and swam to the victim.
Bruises on the head, hips and elbows
‘Otherwise, the man would surely have drowned,’ continues Sarg. The helpers were then able to rescue the 70-year-old from the coast by boat. “Shortly afterwards the water rescue was on site. We then performed first aid together and brought the man to the Seehof on the other bank”, continues the manager, who is proud of the “good and flawless cooperation”.
The emergency services then handed the Germans over to the rescue helicopter crew. According to the coffin, the 70-year-old suffered bruises and abrasions to his head, hip and elbow in the fall.
“Unfortunately, accidents happen here more often”
As the head of operations knows, it is not the first time such an accident has occurred on this point: “Accidents happen here again and again, with hikers sometimes being seriously injured.” the rescue helicopter also called the police to document the accident.
