The battle for the Hainburger Au is considered the birth of the Greens and the modern environmental movement in Austria. The fact that the jewel was saved from destruction in 1984 is thanks to the support of ‘Krone’ founder Hans Dichand.
It was Siberian cold and the trees, long bare, ushered in a harsher winter than they had seen in years. It grew colder by the day, and when on December 8, forty years ago, a star march entered the alluvial forests near Hainburg, which were acutely threatened by deforestation, the ground was frozen. The first campfires flared up in the bushes, around which the brave occupiers – initially only dozens, then hundreds and finally tens of thousands – warmed their hearts and hopes.
