Alpine police, mountain rescuers, helicopters and firefighters in Upper Austria were called to a difficult rescue operation on Saturday evening. An 18-year-old Portuguese woman fell about 70 meters in the Hohe Scharte area near Bad Goisern and was left scantily clad in the snow. She could still call for help herself via her mobile phone.
Around 6 p.m., the Portuguese woman (18) from Canada called the emergency number because she had been walking for about seven hours and urgently needed help. It was possible to obtain the woman’s GPS coordinates and she was thought to be in the Hohen Scharte area, at 1,140 meters above sea level.
Major operation started
Mountain rescuers from Bad Goisern and Bad Ischl and the Alpine police immediately went on foot to look for the hiker – who could no longer be reached by telephone at that time. Two helicopters were also requested to provide support.
I wore clothes that were too light
Faint lights were seen around 6:40 PM and the injured woman was found around 8:00 PM. She must have fallen 70 meters and lay in the snow on steep terrain, scantily clad for the winter temperatures. She probably missed the snow-covered path.
Heli had to illuminate the accident scene
The 18-year-old was immediately warmed up and a safety rope was set up. Due to the complete darkness, the crew of the “Dragonfly” had to illuminate the accident site in order to work safely. The seriously injured woman was flown by emergency helicopter to the university hospital in Salzburg, where she is in intensive care.
