There are many actions against racism, and that has been happening for some time. Recently there was another rumbling on the internet when Bob Geldof and his Band Aid campaign were accused of racism. You wonder: is the excitement justified and what actions against racism make sense?
For almost 40 years, “Do They Know It’s Christmas” has been playing on the radio during the Christmas season. The most famous representatives of the music industry came together to collect donations for people suffering from hunger in Africa. What started as a good idea and remained quite successful is now being called racist. There is now talk about ‘White Saviorism’ and the fact that a negative image of Africa is being painted.
Fear of uprooting
Other recent examples include renaming streets reminiscent of the Nazi era. In some cases, people feel alienated and ‘uprooted’ by politics as a result of these actions. While in this case the city of Salzburg decided to put up additional plaques on street names with Nazi influences to educate people, for some people this still does not go far enough.
What do you think after the excitement about clubs like “Band-Aid” and their popular Christmas song? Do you think that is justified or do you perhaps see it differently? What is your opinion about renaming polluted streets or squares? What do you think about actions against racism and hatred in general? Which do you find useful and which are unnecessary? We look forward to hearing your thoughts in the comments!
