You can pet it: Australia’s deadliest animal will amaze you

Date:

Australia has a large number of animals that can be fatal to humans. Poisonous spiders, sharks, jellyfish and snakes claim countless victims every year. However, most deaths involve another representative of the fauna, which many would also like to stroke…

A survey of the national database National Coronial Information System (NCIS) revealed a surprise: the horse is the deadliest animal among humans. And also in second and third place are four-legged friends that hardly anyone had on their list.

The agency recorded a total of 713 animal-related deaths between 2001 and 2021. Accidents involving horses, mainly falls, accounted for almost a third of these (31.1 percent).

Death while walking the dog
In second place are cattle. During the period studied, 92 people died from being kicked, trampled, knocked over or crushed. Behind them are dogs that have claimed the lives of 82 Australians. Biting in particular, but also falling while walking the dog, led to death.

Kangaroo in fourth place
Only then will a typical Australian animal species appear in the statistics: the kangaroo. The 53 recorded deaths were largely due to collisions with the large marsupials on the endless backcountry roads. Presumably life-threatening snakes (50), bees (45), sharks (39) and crocodiles (25) are only in places 5 to 8.

Amazing when you consider that there are approximately 180 species of sharks and the infamous box jellyfish living off the coast of Down Under. Furthermore, of the ten most venomous snake species in the world, seven are native to Australia, led by the domestic taipan. The venom from a single bite can kill up to 200 people. But today, antivenom is available for all dangerous snake species. In many places, underwater nets protect against sharks, which usually attack humans only very rarely.
