In the case of an American couple who have been missing since 1980, light may finally come into the darkness. Charles and Catherine Romer of Scarsdale, New York, were staying at a Holiday Inn in Georgia on April 8, 1980 – after which they got lost. Her car has also never been found… until now!
Charles, a retired oil executive then 74 years old, and his wife Catherine were on their way back to New York. They had previously vacationed in Miami.
But in Georgia their trail is lost. Suitcases, tax returns and a bottle of whiskey were later found under an upturned bed, but the couple’s car, which was parked in the hotel car park, never reappeared.
45 years after the disappearance of Charles and Catherine, the police in the immediate vicinity of the hotel came across a discovery that could finally solve the case.
Human bones found
The rusted remains of a 1979 Lincoln Continental were eventually found in a retention pond near the hotel. It should be Charles’ car. Glynn County Police detectives found human bones in the car. The victims have not yet been identified. The pond has now been drained and the bottom is being searched with special equipment to secure further evidence.
“Maybe it was just an accident”
Christine Seaman Heller, a granddaughter of Catherine, is confident: “Maybe it wasn’t a terrible ending, maybe it was just an accident,” the New York Times quoted her as saying. The article also mentions $60,000 and $80,000 worth of jewelry that Catherine is said to have owned. Charles’ sons received an inheritance of $1.2 million.
