In 2017, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the major project with an investment volume of $500 billion. At the time, given the sheer size of the project, even the experts believed it was more of a marketing stunt than a serious undertaking.
By the time the first excavators arrived in 2022 and the sand flew through the air in 2023, The Line – as the city project is called – also gained a large media presence. The Line is one of five NEOM projects designed to make Saudi Arabia the center of the world:
