Home is calling! Frans Timmermans, Vice-President of the European Commission, resigns and returns to top Dutch politics. He wants to become the next prime minister in the early parliamentary elections.
The Dutch Social Democrats and the Greens confirmed on Tuesday that the 62-year-old would lead both parties together in the election campaign. The vote will take place on 22 November. Timmermans wants to succeed the early left liberal Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Timmermans is currently still responsible for the climate protection dossier at the European Commission. From 2012 to 2014 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs in Rutte’s previous cabinet of the liberal-conservative VVD.
Skilled negotiator, speaks six languages
Timmermans is considered a skilled negotiator in international climate talks. He comes from the southern Dutch province of Limburg and also speaks English, German, French, Italian and Russian. His vacant post at the European Commission will probably be filled by the Netherlands.
