Four deaths within 24 hours – a tragic series of traffic accidents rocks Upper Austria. Late on Monday evening, three compatriots lost their lives on the street: a father (49) from Molln and two Steyrians (38 and 43). And on Tuesday evening, a 30-year-old was killed in an accident in the Bartelkreuz tunnel in Ebensee.
I left the curb and went into oncoming traffic
The man from Altmünster suddenly drove into the curb of the B 145 around 7 p.m. and then probably crossed the oncoming traffic – thus colliding with the car of a 43-year-old from Bad Ischl, who survived the accident with injuries. However, the 30-year-old was trapped in his wrecked car and firefighters freed him using hydraulic rescue equipment.
Quickly freed from the wreckage
“We had him out within a few minutes, it couldn’t have been faster,” says Commander Christoph Pilz of the FF Ebensee after the dramatic operation. However, subsequent resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful and rescuers were only able to determine that the 30-year-old was dead.
The mayor of Altmünster, Martin Pelzer, is shocked after the death of his young community member in an interview with the “Krone”: “It is a tragic accident. If this happens in your own city, it affects you even more. My deepest condolences go out to the family members and friends.”
This year there have already been 68 road deaths
Even if the latest series of accidents suggests otherwise, the number of fatalities on the roads of Upper Austria this year is – unfortunately – a sad average. According to the mobility organization VCÖ, 68 people will have died in road traffic in 2024, compared to 73 in the same period last year. The main causes of accidents this year were insufficient speed and distraction.
