Truck drivers needed a lot of patience on Thursday morning and afternoon on the Brenner and ultimately also on the Inntal highway in Tyrol. A collision in the border tunnel on the Italian side caused a closure and a long backlog of trucks. The effects will be felt for hours.
The accident happened around 5:30 am. As the Tyrol Regional Transport Department describes in response to questions from “Krone”, a collision took place between a small truck and a heavy transport vehicle on the construction site of the border tunnel between Austria and Italy on the South Tyrolean side.
There have been no reports of injuries so far. But the impact on transit traffic was enormous.
Lockdown lifted, but backlog
As a result, the Brenner highway towards Italy had to be completely closed to freight traffic. A traffic jam was created that was more than 30 kilometers long. “Road users should take into account major loss of time when traveling south,” the Öamtc concluded. As police said in response to questions from “Krone”, cars could still move.
Truck stops and dosing
Around 9:30 a.m., the Tyrolean State Transport Agency reported that there were still 15 kilometers of truck traffic jams on the Brenner highway A13 between Nösslach and Patsch. Therefore, transit traffic on the Inntal highway A12 at Pettnau in the Oberland and at Vomp in the Unterland is stopped until the weather clears. “Source and destination traffic excluded”. Freight traffic is also measured at the Kufstein border crossing.
