In a school in New Zealand, instead of the classic recess bell, hits such as “Thunderstruck” by hard rock pioneers AC/DC, but also evergreens such as “Mah Na Mah Na” from the legendary “Muppet Show” have been playing for some time now. That now causes problems…
Some of the school’s neighbors signed a petition to stop the musical noise sources at Te Kura o Puhinui Warkworth School near Auckland, Radio New Zealand (RNZ) reported. They would cause noise pollution, say the critics.
Director: “Students just love it”
The students who love the recess playlist see it very differently. “We have received feedback from our students,” RNZ director Karney Dawson was quoted as saying. “About 95 percent said they wanted us to keep it – they just love it.”
The hard rock hit and the puppet company hit will be played for the first time at the start of class at 9 a.m. and for the last time at the end of school at 3 p.m. “The students say they enjoy it, it’s fun and it makes a difference – and the parents like it too,” says Dawson.
According to Dawson, an Auckland Council noise specialist confirmed the music volume was not excessive and would not disturb immediate neighbors.
