Russia says it has sent seven children back to Ukraine. This was preceded by Qatar’s mediation efforts, Russian state news agency TASS reported on Thursday.
According to Ukrainian information, thousands of Ukrainian children have been illegally brought to Russia or to Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine since Russia’s war of aggression began in late February 2022. So far only a few have returned.
Ukraine estimates that 20,000 Ukrainian children have been forcibly sent to Russia. Russia is accused of deliberately destroying the identities of Ukrainian children and causing deep emotional and psychological trauma through violent kidnappings. The International Criminal Court in The Hague has issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his children’s representative, Maria Lwowa-Belowa, over the kidnapping. Russia denies the accusations.
Family reunification in the Moscow embassy
Qatar has repeatedly acted as an intermediary between Russia and Ukraine to facilitate the return of kidnapped Ukrainian children. Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Russia Sheikh Ahmed bin Nasser Al-Thani and Lvowa-Belowa attended the family reunification ceremony at the Qatari Embassy in Moscow, TASS reported.
