A trial started in London on Thursday against three Bulgarians who allegedly spied for Russia – partly on behalf of ex-Wirecard board member Jan Marsalek. They deny this. However, two other members of the spy ring have already confessed and are awaiting sentencing.
The prosecutor accuses the two women, aged 30 and 33, and a 39-year-old man, all living in Britain, of spying on people – allegedly enemies of the Kremlin – and places. The espionage activities are said to have taken place in London, but also in Stuttgart, Vienna, Valencia and the Balkan state of Montenegro.
“Significant amounts of money” for espionage activities
According to British researchers, the Bulgarians received some of their orders from the Marsalek in hiding, who was probably in Russia. The ex-sales director of the former Dax group Wirecard has not been charged in the trial.
The defendants are said to have received “significant amounts” for their activities between 2020 and 2023. Prosecutor Alison Morgan said the defendants used a “sophisticated methodology.”
