Punishment hidden – English Transport Minister resigns

Date:

England’s transport secretary, Louise Haigh, has resigned after details of a previous fraud conviction emerged. Before becoming an MP, she pleaded guilty in court in 2013 and was given a suspended sentence at the time.

The Labor politician said in her resignation letter that she was attacked in London in 2013 and gave police a list of things she believed had been stolen. Her work cell phone was underneath. Later she discovered it was at home.

On Thursday evening, the Times newspaper and Sky News television reported that Haigh had subsequently pleaded guilty to a criminal offence. Now the 37-year-old has announced her resignation.

According to the British news agency PA, the opposition Tories party immediately accused British Prime Minister Keir Starmer of having known about the case for a long time and having to explain himself to the public.

In her resignation letter, Haigh wrote that she should have informed her employer directly at the time. It was an honest mistake. She acknowledges that the case – “whatever the facts are” – distracts from the government’s work. “I am sorry to have to leave under these circumstances, but I am proud of what we have achieved.”

Prime Minister Starmer has had to replace a minister just a few months after taking office. Haigh was the youngest woman ever appointed to a British government.
