The ‘Bayesian’ has been at a depth of 50 meters off the coast of Palermo for more than three months. The luxury yacht that capsized during a storm must now be recovered from the seabed. In mid-December, the port authority in Palermo will decide on which plan the ship should be lifted, Italian media report.
The campaign is expected to launch in mid-January 2025. The ship must be lifted from the seabed to the surface and brought ashore within five weeks. The operation is very complex because in addition to the 56 meter long yacht, the 72 meter long mast must also be recovered intact. It is examined how the hull can be rotated and brought into a horizontal position, so that it can then be lifted with a crane. Balloons can be used to make the climb easier.
Either way, the rescue will be costly
When choosing the salvage plan, the costs are of course also taken into account, which will probably run into millions. According to expert Nick Sloane, the rescue could cost around 15 million euros. In 2012, the South African organized the lifting of the cruise ship Costa Concordia, which sank off the Tuscan island of Giglio. The process was considered unprecedented worldwide and took two years at the time. The 290 meter long ship was towed to the port of Genoa for disassembly.
The investigation into the cause of the accident continues
The Bayesian sank during a sudden, heavy storm off the port of Porticello near Palermo, the capital of Sicily. The ship was owned by the Isle of Man-based company Revtom Limited, which in turn is owned by Angela Bacares, the widow of British billionaire Mike Lynch. He and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah died in the shipwreck along with five other people. The investigation into the accident is still ongoing; three people have been charged so far, including the New Zealand captain.
