On Saturday afternoon, several hundred participants gathered at Vienna’s Heldenplatz to express, among other things, their dissatisfaction with the inability of Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen to entrust the FPÖ with government negotiations. The police had previously seized several knives and a blank pistol during identity checks.
The demonstrators gathered at around 11am for a rally at the Archduke Karl Equestrian Monument. The participants were equipped with cowbells, drums and flags; in addition to Austrian and various federal state flags, there were also Russian flags.
“No human”
Homemade signs saying “No Karli!” or “No to Sky Shield”. The organizers had originally planned a march across the ring. However, this was banned by the Viennese police because they expected it would cause traffic chaos and disruptions for shoppers in the shopping streets on the first Christmas shopping Saturday.
The organizers announced on Friday that they wanted to take legal action against this. Criticism of the ban also came from the Freedom Party.
Knives and loose guns seized
Prior to the demonstration, the LPD Vienna announced early this afternoon that several knives and a blank pistol were seized during identity checks in the vicinity of the meeting.
