Severe storms hit several Greek islands in the Aegean Sea on Saturday, causing significant damage. Two people were killed on Lemnos.
According to police, the two fatalities on Lemnos were two men aged 57 and 70. The 57-year-old farmer died when he tried to attach his car, which was stuck in the mud, to his tractor to pull it out, TV channel ERT reports. The 70-year-old fell while cleaning up and died.
Emergency services on high alert
Civil protection had previously issued a warning for northeastern Greece, as well as the center and capital region around Athens. There was a warning of heavy rain and the storm “Bora”. The Greek weather service warned of heavy snowfall. Authorities urged Rhodes residents to stay at home. Traffic was stopped on the holiday island. The emergency services were put on “high alert”. Emergency troops were sent from the capital Athens to Rhodes and Lemnos to provide support.
Danger on Sunday “not over yet”
The Meteorological Office (EMY) warned that the danger has not yet passed. Heavy rain will also fall in central Greece in the coming hours. The storm was preceded by a long period of little rain and unusually high temperatures. Such extreme weather events will occur more often in the future; climate change makes them more likely, it was said.
