Analysts predicted a shift to the right in Romania – a member of NATO and the European Union (EU) – after the unexpected victory of the pro-Russian Kalijn Georgescu in the presidential elections a week ago, when he received almost 23% of the vote.
As for the Senate, the PSD is almost 23%, surpassing the AUR by five percentage points. The PNL and the USR follow again, with 14.5 and almost 12% respectively.
Although ideological differences in Romania have so far existed between conservatives and progressives, the current political situation has led to a confrontation between pro-European and Eurosceptic nationalistss, from which impossible alliances such as those of the Social Democrats and the USR could emerge.
Adding to the chaos of Romania’s election season, there is a court order a recount of the first round of the November 24 elections, after senior security officials claimed the race was artificially tilted by Russian interference.
