At the Advent market, cocoa “Lumumba” sparks a racism debate

Date:

In order not to play on racist stereotypes, stall operators at the Christmas market in the German city of Frankfurt am Main are expected to offer cocoa drinks with rum under a different name.

The previously commonly used name ‘Lumumba’ could be reminiscent of the Congolese freedom fighter Patrice Lumumba, says a spokeswoman for Frankfurter Tourismus und Congress GmbH.

Critics of the term see a mockery in the fact that a drink ‘shot’ bears the name of a man who was shot in the 1960s. The spokeswoman said stallholders were strongly advised to describe the drink on their signs, for example, as ‘Hot Chocolate with Rum’.

Not all signs at the Christmas market have been replaced yet. Some of these are complex and cannot be easily replaced. But they are convinced that the attraction to exhibitors is sufficient.

The Frankfurt Christmas market
Frankfurt’s Christmas market is one of the oldest and largest in Germany. The organizers expect 2.3 million visitors. The recall of mulled wine cups specially produced for this year’s Christmas market already made headlines due to a production error.
