Language problems in classrooms have increased in recent years; this year, for example, almost a quarter of students in Upper Austria lack knowledge of the language of instruction – only in Vienna there are even more. Remarkable: more than a third of children with language problems are Austrian.
Nearly 45 percent of students from the Table Class in Vienna are unable to attend classes properly due to language deficiencies – a number that recently made headlines. But German problems in classrooms also increased in Upper Austria, as shown by a survey by Krone to the Education Directorate. According to this study, almost a quarter (23.3 percent) of first graders in the current school year are classified as so-called exceptional students; means: You lack the necessary language skills to fully follow the lessons. This is of course a challenge for teachers.
