Next year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, but the atrocities of National Socialism remain a terrible memory. It is all the more remarkable that, according to old documents, Adolf Hitler still has honorary citizenship in various communities in Austria.
Numerous historians have been studying Austria’s role in World War II for decades, and much of what happened has now been dealt with. After the annexation to the German Empire (and in some cases before), squares and streets in Austria were named after then “leader” Adolf Hitler, and Hitler also received honorary citizenship in dozens of communities and towns – some of which remain to this day not withdrawn today.
