The major offensive of the Islamists in Syria continues. Ruler Bashar al-Assad’s army now launched a counter-offensive and pushed back the opponents just in front of Hama.
The insurgents of the “Committee for the Liberation of the Levant” have been advancing in northern Syria since last week. They have already captured Aleppo, the country’s second largest city. According to observers, fighters from the jihadist group Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) are now on the verge of capturing Syria’s fourth city, Hama.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH) reported on Tuesday evening that some neighborhoods had been bombed. Families from Hama are said to be fleeing to the south of the province or further to neighboring Homs province.
Assad’s allies have been weakened
The military success of the jihadists is probably due, among other things, to the fact that the main allies of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad have been weakened: Iran and its allied Shia Hezbollah militia in Lebanon as a result of the fighting with Israel and the Russian troops as a result of the war in Ukraine.
Iranian General Javad Ghafari should now support government forces. He became known as the ‘Butcher of Aleppo’ for his role in the recapture of Aleppo in 2016. On Wednesday it was reported that Assad’s army had launched a counter-offensive. During the night, the forces drove the insurgents back from the town of Hama, about ten kilometers to the north.
