An intensive search is underway in the US state of Pennsylvania for a 64-year-old woman who may have fallen into a hole in the ground that suddenly opened. Authorities said the woman went looking for her lost cat on Monday afternoon. When she did not return that evening, her family alerted the police.
On Tuesday evening, emergency services discovered the woman’s vehicle behind a restaurant. In the car they found their five-year-old granddaughter, who was unharmed.
Hole in the ground probably the entrance to an old mine shaft
As they continued to search near the vehicle, officers came across the hole in the ground, which was about the size of a manhole cover. It is likely the entrance to an old mine shaft – a legacy of intensive coal mining that has had a strong impact on Pennsylvania’s landscape and history.
A hole ten meters deep
According to the information, the hole reaches a depth of about ten meters and expands under the Earth’s surface. It is believed that this only came about after the woman began her search for the cat.
However, conditions in the shaft are relatively stable: oxygen levels are sufficient and temperatures are higher than on the surface, it was said. The rescue teams also use cameras in their search. A shoe may be visible in one of the shots.
