Norwegian right-wing terrorist Anders Behring Breivik must remain in prison until further notice. The responsible Norwegian court has rejected Breivik’s request for early release from prison.
According to news agency NTB, the ruling of the Ringerike, Asker and Bærum court stated that the risk of recidivism has not decreased since Breivik’s conviction in 2012. On a positive note, it should be noted that the right-wing terrorist has begun to participate in rehabilitation measures. However, these have not yet had any effect, according to the NTB ruling.
Breivik plans to appeal the verdict
According to the agency, Breivik’s lawyer said his client wanted to appeal the decision.
Expert: Breivik is not mentally ill
Breivik, who now calls himself Fjotolf Hansen, killed a total of 77 people on July 22, 2011 in Oslo’s government district and among mainly young people on the island of Utøya. For this, he was sentenced in 2012 to 21 years of preventive detention with a minimum term of ten years – the highest sentence known in Norwegian case law at the time.
Since the end of the minimum period, he has been allowed to apply for a judicial review at regular intervals to determine whether he can be released early. His first attempt failed in early 2022.
The latest trial marked the first new assessment of the right-wing terrorist’s mental health since Breivik’s conviction in 2012. The experts concluded that the 45-year-old was not psychotic or mentally ill.
