In France, a smoking ban will be banned in public spaces such as beaches, parks and gardens on July 1. This is intended to protect children in particular, as Minister of Astelelle Catherine Vautrin said. Everyone who violates the new smoking ban must pay a fine of 135 euros.
“My goal is simple and at the same time extremely ambitious: we want to ensure that the children born in 2025 are the first smoke -free generation,” the minister said. Countless municipalities had previously published smoking prohibitions in their own direction. Now the prohibition comes nationwide. Beaches, parks and gardens, the environment of schools, bus stops and sports facilities are being hit.
However, outdoor spaces of cafés and e-cigarettes are excluded. According to the minister, it is currently still determined how large the area around schools is, in which they will no longer be smoked in the future. The regulation is also intended to prevent students from smoking for the building.
“Avoidable cause of death”
“Every year one of the ten deaths is due to smoking. It is the most common cause of death,” said Vautrin. Smoking kills 75,000 people in France every year, who are more than 200 deaths a day. Moreover, lung cancer causes terrible suffering.
The minister does not see the freedom of people in France to use a cigarette. “You can smoke at home and in the permitted areas. Freedom to smoke ends where the rights of the children start in clean air.” It has been proven that prevention works. In 2023, 15.6 percent of 17-year-olds would have stated that they smelled. Ten years earlier it was twice as much.
