In the rainforest of Guatemalas, archaeologists have discovered an almost 3000 -year -old Maya site -with temples, pyramids and mysterious stone sculptures. “Los Abuelos” could have been an important ritual center.
In the north of Guatemala, archaeologists have discovered a Maya site of about 2,900 years old. The researchers named the place “Los Abuelos” (the grandparents), because two anthropomorphic stone sculptures were found there, which were probably devoted to the cult of the ancestors, as team leader Milan Kovác said. An observatory, pyramids, altars, stealing fragments and ceramics appeared in the excavations.
The place in the rainforest extends over about 16 square kilometers near the Uaxactún site in the province of Petén. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Tikal, one of the most important cultural centers of Mayazivilization, is only about 40 kilometers south of “Los Abuelos”.
The now discovered place would have been one of the most important ritual centers in the region, as team leader Kovác said in a press conference in the city of Guatemala. The stone figures found there, who must represent a man and a woman as a few, date from 600 to 400 BC.
The sitting sculptures are approximately one and a half meters high. Ceramics were found at her feet that were clearly broken. The place, which the discoverers described as a small temple, would have been used for ritual purposes for about 1000 years and then left until the 800 AD was. was again used by later residents.
The team of archaeologists from Slovakia and Guatemala also made finds in two other nearby places, Petnal and Cambrayal. In Petnal, which was probably a former political center of the Maya, a 33 meter high pyramid was found – the largest in the area so far investigated.
