Krampus and Co. – Is so much violence in customs still a thing today?

Beaten women, intimidated children – there are customs around Christmas that can take on violent tendencies. In Austria, Krampus runs and the behavior of the artists and spectators is repeatedly criticized. Has this tradition aged badly?

Imagine that there is one night a year when you would rather not go out because you are officially allowed to be hunted. Of six men in costume, armed with a cow horn. If you get caught, you will be hit several times by this horn. No – it is not the plot of a scary movie, but reality for all women on the German island of Borkum. Every year on December 5, a custom that only exists there is celebrated there: “Klaasohm”.
