In 2011, Anders Breivik killed eight people with a bomb in Oslo’s government district and then shot another 69 people on the island of Utöya for right-wing extremist motives. But instead of serving his prison sentence with remorse, he complains about the treatment.
“Inhuman” and “humiliating” – this is how the man who has claimed so many lives describes his conditions in prison. And this despite the fact that the 45-year-old has three private rooms at his disposal.
To bring about improvements, he even sued the Norwegian state. In February, Breivik failed in a lawsuit over this. A court in Oslo will hear Breivik’s appeal on Monday.
Facilities also include a flat-screen TV and a games console. The prison responded to Breivik’s desire for pets by purchasing three parakeets. But now the parakeets that Breivik said were at the bottom of his pet list have been replaced by two guinea pigs.
Photos published Thursday by Norwegian news agency NTB show the two animals, as well as photos of fjords and mountains pasted on some walls.
Breivik was sentenced to 21 years in prison in 2012, followed by preventive detention. On Wednesday, a court rejected Breivik’s request for early release on probation.
