Controversial right-wing American news anchor Tucker Carlson has traveled to Moscow again to explore the ‘Russian perspective’ on Russia’s conflict with Ukraine and the West. For this purpose, this time he interviewed Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The Russian minister emphasized that his country wanted to avoid “any misunderstanding” with the US. Nevertheless, it will use “all means” to defend itself.
The United States and its allies “must understand that we are ready to use all means to prevent them from achieving the strategic defeat of Russia,” Lavrov said in an interview with Carlson published Thursday (see video below).
Hoping that Western countries would have taken seriously Moscow’s recent use of a new type of missile in Ukraine, Lavrov continued: “We are sending signals, and we hope that the last one, a few weeks ago, was the signal with the new weapon. system called Oreshnik, (…) was taken seriously.”
“Will send more messages”
Two weeks ago, Russia fired its new hypersonic missile ‘Oreshnik’ at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin threatened to fire the weapon at the Ukrainian capital Kiev in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory. Lavrov now stressed that Moscow would “send further messages” “if they do not draw the necessary conclusions.”
Putin had stated that the ‘Oreshnik’ missile had ten times the speed of sound and could not be intercepted. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack the “latest outbreak of Russian madness” and called for adjustments to air defense systems to deal with the threat.
Uncritical interview with Putin
During his last visit to Moscow, Carlson had a conversation with Putin. But hardly any hard questions were asked. The moderator listened for a long time to the president as he spoke and gave his reasons for the attack on Ukraine.
