Macron instructs his prime minister to form a new government in July

French president relies on his “collective capacity” to negotiate deals with other political forces except Le Pen and Mélenchon

French President Emmanuel Macron this weekend renewed his confidence in his prime minister, Élisabeth Borne, and asked her to lead talks with the opposition in early July to form a “new government of action”. The French head of state himself made this known in an interview with the AFP agency.

The ruling coalition lost an absolute majority in the National Assembly after the last parliamentary elections a week ago. Therefore, Macron is now looking for the formula to govern, either in coalition with another party or by making specific agreements to pass laws or implement reforms.

Borne will consult with the rest of the parliamentary groups to “examine the degree of cooperation” and “I am confident in our collective capacity to achieve this,” the president said. “At the end of the week, I will propose a roadmap and a government of action prepared to meet the challenges ahead,” he announced.

The allies for this “action government” range “from the communists to the republicans” (moderate right), Macron said. In any case, the French president rules out the participation of Marine Le Pen’s National Regrouping and Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s La Francia Insumisa – it would be the equivalent of Podemos in Spain – because “they don’t fit as governing parties.”
