After a heavy storm, 110,000 households in eastern Australia lost power. There was “catastrophic” damage to power lines in Brisbane and the Gold Coast region on Tuesday. The damage was “on the order of a cyclone.”
For some households it will take days before power is restored, says energy supplier Energex.
Woman killed by branch
A 59-year-old woman died when she was struck by a falling tree in the coastal area of the Gold Coast. “Unfortunately, she suffered serious head injuries and died,” rescuer Jaye Newton told reporters.
“There were trees everywhere along the road”
Another woman was trapped in her car for over an hour by a fallen tree. “It looked like a disaster area, there were trees everywhere along the road.” The situation has been explosive for several days (see video above) and there is no relief in sight for the time being.
The Australian Weather Service warned of further severe storms with heavy rain, strong winds and hail. There was a threat of “very dangerous, heavy thunderstorms”.
Australia in particular is affected by climate change
A report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change from February 2022 assumes that the country will be hit more often by devastating natural disasters in the future.
Stronger heat, more dangerous fires, more droughts and floods, higher sea levels and drier winters can be expected.
