The Syrian army confirmed on Saturday that it has withdrawn its units from the provinces of Deraa and Al Sueida, in southern Syria, after “terrorist elements” attacked checkpoints, while it said it had established a “security cordon” in those areas.

“Our armed forces operate in Deraa and Al Sueida “I have implemented a withdrawal, positioning and establishment of a strong and coherent defense and security cordon in that direction after terrorist elements attacked checkpoints and remote points of the army with the aim of distracting our forces,” he indicated in a statement from the Syrian army.

The purpose of these attacks, according to the Syrian army, is “to distract our forces, who were starting to regain control of the situation in the country.” Homs and Hama against terrorist organizations,” the note said.

This new positioning of the Syrian army comes after local factions took over the city Deracapital of the province of the same name, and which was the cradle of the 2011 popular uprisings in the context of the so-called “Arab Spring”.

This offensive in southern Syria by rebel factions takes place in parallel with another offensive by an insurgent coalition with the presence of Islamist groups, which started the fight against the government of Syrian President Bashar al Assad on November 27.

This coalition, led by the Levant Liberation Organization (heir to the former Syrian branch of Al Qaeda) and consists of a rebel group backed by Türkiye, is located at the gates of the city of Homs, in central Syria.

In just over a week of offensive, this alliance managed to gain control of the cities of Aleppo and Hama, both provincial capitals.

Iran withdraws personnel

At the same time, Iran would withdraw its military and diplomatic personnel from Syria, both from its embassy in Damascus and from the Revolutionary Guards military bases it maintains in the country, the New York Times reported this Saturday, citing unidentified Iranian officials leaders. sources.

In its note, the US newspaper highlights this Iranian move as a “sign of Tehran’s inability to keep Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in power as he faces the resurgent rebel offensive.”

Iran, along with Russia and the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah, is Damascus’s main ally and its aid and military intervention have been decisive in preventing the collapse of the Syrian government since 2012.
