In a double interview, Renate Anderl, chairman of the Federal Chamber of Labour, and Günther Goach, chairman of the AK Carinthia and vice-president of the Federal Chamber of Labour, talk about the demands on the new government, the unconditional basic income and the record number bankruptcies this year.
“Kron”: In Carinthia there has been a decrease in the number of long-term unemployed, but a sharp increase in the number of young unemployed to 16.4 percent. Why is that? What can you do about it?
Renate Anderl: Most importantly, we need more companies that give young people a chance. Companies that are committed to an apprenticeship. But we currently see that the austerity measures also have consequences for the AMS. This is absolutely the wrong way. If savings are made there, measures are lacking. And it would now be urgent to provide young people with good measures to qualify them, because they are urgently needed in the labor market. It is now urgent to invest in training more people, especially in the so-called jobs of the future. It’s about who installs a PV system on the roof and is now the new climate gardener. For all these professions you need to undergo training.
Gunther Goach: We have a very suitable tool in Carinthia, namely a training workshop. I always say that in the Sunday talks we not only want to demand certain things, but also do something about them. We have now expanded this social partner project at the Villach Technology Park by nine million euros. We have 36 companies here that provide inter-company and intercompany training. The fact is, and I agree with the President, that it is necessary for companies to make their contribution, because they know that skilled workers will continue to be needed in the future. Unemployment can no longer be tolerated. It doesn’t matter whether it is in Carinthia or Austria. We have the lowest increase in unemployment in Carinthia, at five percent, but every increase is one too many. We have been advocating for a student fund for a long time: those who do not receive training pay something for it, and those who do receive training receive part of this fund. This is something that can be done concretely, it is something that will benefit the economy as a whole and ultimately society.
