A 48-year-old from Hall in Tyrol fell victim to brazen internet fraudsters: The woman wanted to buy gold online and was tricked into making several transfers abroad. She also ended up giving crooks access to her computer, which led to a compromised account.
An advertisement in a video meant the downfall of the 48-year-old Tyrolean. She clicked on the link and provided her phone number and email address. Between mid-November and early December, the woman was approached several times by unknown people.
Seven transfers abroad
“The perpetrators tricked the 48-year-old into making a total of seven transfers to a foreign account to purportedly buy gold,” investigators said. But then the criminals went one step further.
Remote access to computers allowed
They tricked the woman into opening a cryptocurrency account. The victim then provided access to her computer “to assist with the installation.” “The perpetrators transferred the entire account balance to another account,” the investigators continued.
The victim suffered damage of approximately 22,000 euros.
