Record damages case against a domestic company: After a tragedy in an amusement park, an American judge orders the Tyrolean manufacturer of a free-fall tower to pay 310 million dollars in damages! More than two years ago, a 14-year-old fell to his death while driving at 120 km/h.
The tragedy at an amusement park in Orlando, Florida, made headlines in late March 2022. Because a 14-year-old’s seat belt wasn’t properly fastened during the “Free Fall Ride,” the teen was thrown from the seat – and ran to his death at 75 mph!
According to the American leisure operator, the 131 meter high freefall tower is the largest in the world. Just seconds before the terrible accident, Tyler Sampson shouted in panic to a friend sitting next to him: “If I don’t survive this, please tell my mom and dad I love them!”
The staff did not check it properly
Apparently the 6-foot-2, 300-pound student, an avid soccer player, was too big for the trip. But the staff did not check this. Additional seat belts would have cost only $660.
While the amusement park had already reached an agreement with the parents of Tyler Sampson on damages, now, two and a half years after the death tragedy, a legal blow follows: the court in Orange County convicted the Tyrolean manufacturer and patent holder of the free-fall toys found in amusement parks over the around the world for a record $310 million in damages for domestic companies!
Family law lawyers: “Profit came before safety!”
The family’s lawyers said after the daylong trial: “Tyre’s death was the result of blatant negligence and failure to put safety before profit!”
The free-fall tower was never opened again after the accident and is now being dismantled.
