Wild scenes – chase after gas theft ends with a gunshot

Date:

A wild chase took place in the German-Austrian border area on Lake Constance on Sunday evening. An armed man was caught stealing petrol from a stolen vehicle in Lindau. His escape first took him to Vorarlberg before returning to Germany, where he veered off the road – and eventually a fateful shot was fired.

On Sunday evening around 10 p.m., a patrol from the Lindau border police station found a suspicious vehicle at a gas station in the industrial area. The driver refueled his vehicle there and then left without paying. The officers followed the vehicle and tried to stop it using a signal device.

The driver did not comply with the request and evaded control. Several police patrols from Lindau and Lindenberg tried to follow the refugees and stop them. It has now become known that the vehicle used has been reported stolen and that the driver is in possession of a firearm.

Quick escape to Bregenz
Despite further requests to stop, the suspect accelerated and drove at high speed via Lindau towards the Austrian border. Austrian emergency services were then called in to provide support. At Bregenz the driver turned around and drove back towards the Hohenweiler border crossing. The further escape route led via the B308 towards Lindenberg.

He broke through several police roadblocks and rammed several commercial vehicles. On a bend in the Rohrach area he initially lost control of his vehicle and left the road. Several patrols then blocked the escapee’s further journey. He did not respond to subsequent police requests to exit the vehicle.

Special unit of the Austrian police in action
Several pursuing forces, including a unit from the Austrian police’s Cobra special operations command, surrounded the vehicle. The driver, who has now been identified, barricaded himself in his car and sometimes threatened the forces from inside the vehicle with a firearm.

After several requests to exit the vehicle, entry was finally made. The 43-year-old man, born in Leutkirch, shot himself in the head and was seriously injured. Rescuers treated the man and took him to a hospital.

Several vehicles damaged
There was no police use of firearms. A total of three commercial vehicles and the suspect’s vehicle were damaged during the pursuit. Two emergency services were slightly injured.
